Spring 2026 Update

Updated: March 1, 2026

Survey Season Status

Spring survey operations are now underway in all regions. Snowmelt is producing above-average flows in the Rocky Mountain and Pacific Northwest regions. Field teams should exercise caution around high-water sites and check conditions before deploying equipment.

Fishing Conditions

West Coast

Steelhead runs are strong in Northern California and Oregon rivers. Trout season opens April 26 in most inland waters. Check local regulations for specific openers.

Great Lakes

Ice-out is expected mid-March through early April depending on latitude. Early season walleye and perch fishing should be excellent based on fall survey data.

Southeast

Bass spawning is underway in southern states. Crappie runs are peaking in reservoirs. Water temperatures are trending 2–3 degrees above average.

Northeast

Rivers remain cold with snowmelt. Early trout stocking is complete in most states. Spring runs of herring and shad expected by late April.

Advisories

High Water Advisory — Columbia River Basin
