Fishing

Recreational fishing data, regulations, seasons, and resources to help you fish responsibly and sustainably.

Recreational Fishing Data

The Fish Census Research Group collects and analyzes data on recreational fishing activity across national waterways. Our data informs sustainable management practices and helps shape conservation policy at federal, state, and local levels.

Anglers play a critical role in aquatic conservation. By understanding fishing pressure, harvest rates, and species interactions, we develop strategies that balance recreational access with healthy ecosystems.

Fishing Seasons & Regulations

Freshwater Fishing

Freshwater seasons vary by region and species. Trout, bass, catfish, and panfish each have specific open seasons, bag limits, and size restrictions designed to maintain healthy populations.

  • General trout season: Last Saturday in April through November 15
  • Warm water species: Year-round in most waters
  • Catch-and-release only areas designated statewide

Saltwater Fishing

Ocean and coastal fishing regulations are set in coordination with federal marine fisheries management. Seasons, quotas, and gear restrictions vary by species.

  • Rockfish: Seasonal closures vary by depth and region
  • Salmon: Limited season based on annual stock assessments
  • Halibut: Year-round with size and bag limits
