Drought & Fish Populations
Drought conditions pose serious threats to aquatic ecosystems. Reduced streamflows, elevated water temperatures, and shrinking habitat can cause fish kills, block migration routes, and eliminate spawning habitat. FCRG monitors drought impacts and coordinates emergency responses to protect the most vulnerable species and waterways.
Current Drought Status
Western States
Above-average snowpack this year has eased drought conditions in many western watersheds. However, long-term groundwater deficits persist, and summer conditions remain uncertain.
Central & Southern Plains
Moderate to severe drought continues in portions of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Stream and river levels are below normal, impacting warm water fisheries.
FCRG Drought Response
Emergency Fish Rescue
When water levels drop critically, FCRG field teams relocate fish from drying streams and pools to sustainable habitat. In 2025, we rescued over 15,000 fish across 45 sites in drought-affected areas.
Flow Monitoring
Real-time monitoring of stream flows and water temperatures at critical sites. Data triggers emergency protocols when conditions approach thresholds harmful to fish.
Water Rights Advocacy
FCRG advocates for environmental water allocations that protect instream flows for fish and wildlife, particularly during drought. We provide scientific data to inform water management decisions.
Community Water Conservation
We partner with communities to promote water conservation practices that benefit both people and aquatic ecosystems. Small actions in aggregate make a significant difference for stream health.
